About
The Suicide Care in Community Mental Health Settings online virtual training is designed to provide you with an understanding of how best to serve patients across the suicide care pathway. The training aims to synthesize evidence-based suicide interventions and the Joint Commission and other suicide prevention expectations into two parts:
- Part 1: Assessment and Management of Suicide Risk (4-hours)
- Part 2: Treatment of Suicide Risk with Caring Contacts and DBT (4-hours)

Part 1: Assessment and Management of Suicide Risk (3.25 CME)
Upon completion of this activity, you should be able to:
- Use recommended prompts to elicit a narrative when a patient screens positive for suicide risk.
- Describe how to embed suicide risk assessment into a suicide clinical narrative.
- Use the Rocky Mountain MIRECC Therapeutic Risk Management Risk Stratification Table to assign levels of suicide risk based on severity and temporality of risk.
- Distinguish between management and treatment of suicide risk.
- Identify the steps of the Safety Planning Intervention.
Part 2: Treatment of Suicide Risk with Caring Contacts and DBT (3.5 CME)
Upon completion of this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe characteristics of evidence-based and ineffective treatment.
- Describe the core principles of Caring Contacts.
- Distinguish between the goals and targets of treatment in DBT.
- Use a DBT chain analysis to understand a specific occurrence of suicidal thoughts or behavior.
